There is a story in the New Testament told by all four Gospel writers; it is that important. It is the story of the feeding of the 5000. So much has been said of the remarkable events of that day, but there is one perspective on that day’s miracle that I have only heard once, and that perspective bears repeating.

Following the murder of John the Baptist, Jesus sought seclusion on the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee. It was not to be though; crowds of people followed Him giving Him and the apostles no privacy. Nonetheless, seeing the crowds, He had compassion on them and spent the day ministering to them.

As it approached evening, He saith to Phillip, “When shall we buy bread that these may eat?”

Phillip answered Him, “Two hundred penny worth of bread is not sufficient for them that everyone of them may take a little.”

It seems almost as a despairing afterthought when Andrew then said, “There’s a lad here with five barley loaves and two small fishes, but what are they among so many?”

Well, as you remember the story, Jesus took the five loaves and two fishes, blessed them, broke them, and under His hands the bread and fish multiplied! The disciples distributed baskets of food to the multitudes. Thousands were fed that day, and when it was over, the disciples gathered up more food in the leftovers than what there had been in the first place. It was an astounding miracle! – so impressive, in fact, that we still talk of it, and still can’t explain it!

Now, for just a moment, would you imagine if you were that boy who had brought forward the five loaves and fishes? How do you think he must have felt when he saw what the Lord did with his small offering?

How many of us are like that boy? We too have only five loaves and two small fishes to give to the work of the Lord. Yet under the Lord’s hand, He multiplies our simple offering into miracles that bless thousands. You, know, we don’t have to be the president to make a difference.
