Important People

Boys at Church

I remember once as a little boy meeting a man who spoke to me in a very unusual way. As we worked together, he didn’t talk to me like I was just a boy. He spoke to me like an equal, as though he really believed, that in spite of the fact that he was much older than me, that he was no better than I was. I remember what an impact that had on me. It seemed unusual not to be talked down to. I have to tell you, I was immediately drawn to this guy; I liked him.

Now not too long ago I came across a story that amplifies this point.

It seems that a Sunday school class of tiny children got some visitors one day. Some ‘very important’ church leaders dropped in. The teacher bent down and asked a question of a little child on the front row.

“How many important people are here today?”

The child stood up and began counting, “One, two, three, …” reaching a total of seventeen.

There were seventeen very important people there that day. There were seventeen people in the room, the visitors and the children.

And so it is with the Lord. Age, accomplishment, education, race, gender, whatever, all are alike unto God. (2 Nephi 26:33)

I am a child of God. We all are.
