It was once said by a wise man that more religion is caught than taught. I think I believe that. The Apostle Paul said we should be “… an example of (all) the believers, …” (1 Timothy 4:12) You just never know who’s watching, as this story illustrates:
One morning before kindergarten, six-year-old Jaxson came to his mother and asked if he could do his own hair that day. Normally Mom would help him. I suppose she’s seen a few hairstyles in her days done by six-year-olds. But for some reason, today she said he could go ahead. Oh, he was so excited! He ran in and got in front of the mirror, and he went to work. He was gone for about 30 minutes.
Several times he came to his mother to have her inspect his work. At one point she said, “Okay, you can stop. It looks good.”
But Jaxson wasn’t satisfied. Back to the mirror he went. Finally he came out and announced that he was done. “Mom,” he said, “how does my hair look?”
“It looks great,” Mom said, and it did too.
“Are you sure?” Jaxson pressed.
“Yes” Mom assured him.
Then to Mom’s surprise, Jaxson asked her to come with him. Well, she was busy at the moment; she tried to put him off. But Jaxson wouldn’t hear of it. “Come right now, Mom” he insisted.
She followed him into the hallway where all the family pictures were hanging. He pointed up to the senior picture of his older brother, Blair.
“Mom,” he said, “does my hair look exactly like Blair’s?”
“It does,” she said. “You did so good.”
Then touching the front of his hair he said, “…even the part right here?”
Even the part was right.
You know, what touched me even more about this story was that Mom told it just days before Blair left to serve in Toronto, Canada for two years. Who can measure the impact that Blair’s service will have on that adoring younger brother? It is a compliment of the highest order to be emulated by others. It is not an overstatement to say that there has been, and will yet be, many souls saved in the Kingdom of Heaven, because the simple unpretentious obedience of one led another to find their [his] master.
I am one who was led by the light of another. I know it’s true. Let your light so shine.
