It has been said that ‘man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.’ (David O. McKay)
Not long ago, on a brisk October morning, Emmeline, her sister MaryAnn, and her younger brother Nathan were in the family van, and on their way to school. As they rounded a corner, Emmeline was momentarily blinded by the rising sun. She had scarcely begun to press on the brakes when the sun suddenly vanished behind a truck.
At nearly 50 miles per hour, the van slammed into the back of a slow-moving semi. The horrendous force of the impact drove the dashboard into the front seats, breaking both of MaryAnn’s legs. The restraining lap belt seriously injured Nathan in the back seat. And Emmeline as she regained consciousness and realized what had happened, her first thoughts were of her brother and sister and that she had killed them. Panic ripped through her. Crying and screaming, she struggled to free herself, but the steering wheel and dash had her hopelessly pinned. Then suddenly, Emmeline realized that she was not alone as a voice spoke clearly and distinctly in her ear.
“Emmeline, it’s okay. You’re the one that is hurt the worst. Your brother and sister are fine.”
Emmeline screamed, “[It hurts! –] It really hurts, I want out!”
