Have you ever felt that your faith was just not enough to handle this stressful world? I have, and that’s why this story gives me hope.

Jesus came walking on the Sea of Galilee sometime around 3:00 in the morning. The disciples see Him and cry out in terror thinking He’s a spirit.

Jesus bids them “…Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27)

Peter still wondering in the darkness if it were really the Master, asked if he might come out to the Savior on the water.

Jesus answer was an invitation and a stretching. He said simply, “…Come.” (Matthew 14:29)

And Peter did it; he walked on the water, that is as long as his gaze was fixed on the Master. But the boisterous waves broke his concentration. In fear he looked away from the Savior and immediately began to sink.

“…Lord, save me.” he cried out. (Matthew 14:30)

And the Lord stretched forth his hand, caught Peter and lifted him back up on the water.

Together they returned to the boat. Amazingly the winds ceased and there followed a great calm.

Jesus said to Peter, “…Oh thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Matthew 14:31)

Now, some may think that Peter failed. But did he – really? His effort increased his faith, and with the Master’s gentle correction, he would succeed again.

And so it is with us. Our faith may falter for a time, and this stormy world threaten to drown us, but if we keep our eyes fixed resolutely on Him and going forward, He will not only save us, but bring a great calm to our heart.

My faith may be small, but with Him, it’s all I need.
